The Day the Zombie Apocalypse Started: How It Could All Go Down

By now, you’ve heard your fair share of zombie apocalypse theories and speculation. Where will it start? How will it unfold? Who will be left alive? But how can we really know these things?

A deadly virus outbreak
You’re lying in bed watching TV when you feel a tickle in your throat. You reach for a tissue and then stop. What if I’m sick? The tickle is gone now, but what if it’s not? What should you do? The answer to that question will ultimately decide whether or not you’re alive tomorrow. Your brain kicks into gear and starts an internal dialogue about what to do. You could go to the hospital, but would they take care of you?

A mutation that makes the virus even more deadly
It’s not a question of if this will happen, but when. A mutation in the virus that is more deadly or contagious than anything we’ve seen before. It could be something as small as a simple change in an amino acid in one of the proteins that make up Ebola, or it could be something completely different. We just don’t know.

An accident at a research lab
A few hours before sunrise, an accident at a research lab unleashes a virus that changes its hosts’ DNA. Victims die and return to life as zombies. At first, it’s hard to tell what is happening as every zombie looks like a normal person. But soon, bites are discovered on victims and people start turning into zombies. The government tries to contain the virus by locking down all major cities in the US and setting up quarantine zones for those who have been bitten or exposed to the virus.

A terrorist attack
Terrorist attacks, whether they come from a rogue state or an extremist group, are one of the most likely causes for a zombie apocalypse. A few things that need to happen for this scenario to take place are as follows. First, a terrorist needs to develop some kind of weaponized disease that is highly infectious and kills within 24 hours. Second, they would need to release this contagion onto a major population center with little access to medical care.

A natural disaster
In a world where zombies are slowly becoming an accepted reality, it’s only natural that we would eventually have to face them head on. However, as if our situation wasn’t difficult enough, some researchers have argued that a zombie-causing natural disaster could be the catalyst for this apocalypse. A geologist has proposed that if a large earthquake were to occur near the San Andreas fault in California and cause it to slip, this would create big waves in the ocean and move sediment from land into water.
