The Ottomans had been beseiging the city of Vienna for two months in their jihad to push their Caliphate further and further into Europe when the battle broke out. The Vienniese garrison frantically held the city with a mere 16,000 soldiers and volunteers against the 140,000 or more Ottomans, waiting for relief from the Holy League(Holy Roman Empire, Hapsburg Monarchy and Poland-Lithuania) to break the seige before they were overrun or starved. Sappers had dug hundreds of meters of trenches and detonated mines under the walls in preparation for the assault. This had been the closest the muslims had come to finally capturing Vienna(this was their third try) and the farthest they had ever pushed into Europe. Luckily however, this is when the Relief army of Austrians, Germans and most famously, Poles had finally arrived atop the hills behind the Ottoman camp. The battle the following day would decide the fate Europe.
