It's a weird historic accident that being against the family social services and being anti-abortion got wedded together in a political interest group.

A lot of people in this group will rationalize away the problem, that this should be taken care of by families or by private charity without really looking into the practical problems associated with that. I think there is a legitimate pro-life stance but to hold this dance you really have to own it wholesale.

There are similar clusters of incongruities on both the left and the right, where people just kind of buy things together or avoid the cognitive dissonance by just not thinking about them at the same time. Or protect themselves with ignorance about the whole picture.

I have known some pro-life people that were very consistent on this across the board. Many of them were catholic and some of them were liberal also. They we're also interested in any practical solution including improved contraception and education that reduce the number of abortions. They had actually thought through their position, looked at the consequences and fact checked.
