On The Hunt For Cambodia's Absinthe Distillery With Jockey! (In The Jungle?) 🐴

One of the more interesting things I have heard of in Cambodia is the existence of an Absinthe distillery hidden away in the jungle.

Well I don't think it is absolutely hidden but I like the romantic notion of a jungle distillery! πŸ˜‰

Welcome To The Jungle! Absinthe In The Jungle?

Those of you who read my post about searching for the best speak easy bars in Bangkok will know that I had some Absinthe during one of those nights and it made me very drunk.

So now that I have heard of an Absinthe distillery here in Cambodia I am off to winkle it out and try some of the local drop! πŸ˜‰

My online research has lead me to believe that the master brewer who founded this Absinthe distillery has passed away. I am sure he would have been an interesting man to talk to. The distillery is still here though and I will find it.

The original Absinthe distilled there was called Syn which I think is an interesting use of letters.

Absinthe Hunting

Absinthe has an interesting history and there is a lot of myth surrounding the drink. I will write a post on the history of Absinthe once I find the distillery. Probably a few Absinthes so I can see it being a little bit of a wobbly post! πŸ˜‰

The nice part about investigating drinks like this in Cambodia is that there appears to be very little tax on alcohol here. If you fly into Cambodia your friends will never ask you to bring duty free alcohol as it's cheaper in the supermarket than in duty free!

As an aside for anyone who is interested in the origins and history of alcohols and the cocktails they create I can highly suggest reading or listening to Amy Stewart's excellently named and engagingly written The Drunken Botanist. 🍸
