Recently I published a post where I translated a material that I usually use for class about what an abstract is and how to prepare it. You can read it in https://steempeak.com/academic/@pedrobrito2004/notes-about-the-summary-of-a-research-report
I have to stress that the material is initially in Spanish and I had it published on a site that we share among several to publish materials for our classes, you can check the source at https://metodologiaecs.wordpress.com/2016/10/22/sobre -a-summary-of-research-report /
As it was very long in the original post I decided to publish it in parts and keep the references so that the reviewer knows that it is part of a larger text.
What is a summary or abstrac?
The abstract consists of a brief description of the main ideas of the work to which it precedes. It is a new document representative of the original, which must include all the highlights of the document following the style and arrangement of the document.
The summary is the letter of presentation of the TFG [Final Degree Project], it is written at the end since only when the work has been written is it when the subject is known in depth and when it is known what is most relevant, and what is which therefore must be incorporated into the summary.
As stated in the Teaching Guide for the End of Degree Projects in English Studies, this work must include a summary of up to 150 words in English, which will be included on the cover.
Phases of the process of summarizing
The process of preparing a summary presents two basic stages:
- Analysis
- Synthesis
The analysis
The analysis is an intellectual process in which the fundamental ideas that will be included in the summary are extracted. On this basis, the synthesis stage will be founded.
The steps of the analysis process are:
- Quick reading of the primary document to locate the thematic categories and the most relevant paragraphs.
- Taking notes and underlining the parts of the work that best represent its content.
- Deep reading of the fundamental parts.
- Dissociate the substantial from the accidental.
- Skip the information that is obvious or known.
Synthesis
The synthesis involves developing new and concise information from the data extracted from the analysis.
The steps of the synthesis process are:
- First reorganize and recompose the information resulting from the analysis respecting the structure of the primary document.
- Re-read the summary in order to filter and debug the information to obtain a new autonomous secondary document and true to the original.
At another time I will finish translating and publishing the rest of the material.
