Decades ago, just before going off to college, I worked for Davey Tree company for a few months in the hills of Santa Cruz County, California. The first day on the job I was shown how to use the wood chipper, and I was told some scary stories about the chipper chewing people up if they weren't careful. That was my introduction in life to PPE -- Personal Protective Equipment.
A hard hat, ear plugs, goggles, and gloves were of critical importance for doing the job without getting hurt. I still remember the admonition I received on my first day about the importance of tucking in my shirt tails, so that I wouldn't be pulled into the chipper by my clothing, as had happened to several unfortunate employees.
In more recent years I've done a lot of safety consulting with U.S. and Canadian companies for industries in which injuries and even fatalities are known to occur. Today's tragic story of a young man's death at work reminds me of what is all too easy to forget -- that every day people around the world risk life and limb to provide us with the goods and services that we take for granted.
