A woman from Thunder Bay and a man from Greenstone were killed Monday night when a tractor trailer collided with the SUV in which they were driving on Highway 11/17 at Shuniah.
The Ontario Provincial Police investigation has so far revealed that the victims' vehicle, heading east, attempted to make a left turn to enter a rest area.
That's when the SUV was snapped up by the trailer that followed.
The truck then collided with a van that was driving in the opposite direction.
The occupants of the SUV, Joann Mendowegan, 61, and Christopher Towegishig, 46, were declared dead at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the semi-trailer has been accused of reckless driving.
The accident caused the closure of a section of the Trans-Canada Highway 11/17 for approximately eight hours.
