An accountant that helps you save money? Practically unheard of right?

Through the years, I've employed many people to help me with filing my income taxes. About the only person I've ever trusted with the task is my very grandpa, and unfortunately he passed over 10 years ago.

Since then, I've navigated a string of trials and errors. I learned quite quickly not to work with institutionalized chains, as even if they do help you save on your taxes, inevitably they gouge you with their own exorbitant fees.

So, why would I keep anyone on my payroll that doesn't help me save or earn money, preferably both, but at least one? It simply doesn't make sense.

Even after hiring a certified public accountant, I never had the sense that I was saving a whole lot of money, or that they were actively looking for ways to help me save. They were nice, and I liked talking with them and spending time with them.

But as tough as it is to cut off vendors you like, there are plenty of other settings where intentional chit-chat could take place. If my accountant showed up to work late, wore a choker and spiked leather, smoked weed, and was a bad conversationalist, but found ethical and legal ways to help me save money, I'd hire him in a heartbeat.

Yesterday, I reaffirmed that filing taxes was not within my wheelhouse, and that it would be a waste of my time. I ended up handing off the process to an accountant. An accountant that came at the recommendation of the consultants I'm currently working on my consumer proposal with.

Not only was he efficient, but he was also affordable. Not only was he affordable, but he also ended up saving me several thousand dollars, I estimate.

Now, this is the first time I've filed in BC. Previous filings were all in Alberta, and generally I found myself owing $1,000 to $2,000, in addition to GST of a similar amount. So, maybe there are some tax advantages in BC that I'm not aware of.

Either way, when I was given the final numbers by the accountant, I was pleasantly surprised.

Guess who will be on my payroll next year?

Experts aren't all the same. The right ones care about their work and the results they help their clients achieve.
