Meaning of plagiarism

Plagiarism according to dictionary.com is an "act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author's work as one's own as by not crediting the original author". Source
In other words, it occurs when someone directly lift from a person's work or idea as his or her own and then refuse to credit the original author. It is also known as intellectual theft especially in the academic circle. In it's entirety, it is synonymous with stealing. When someone engage in such act, it is said that the person has plagiarized and such person is a plagiarist.

Types of plagiarism

Various types of plagiarism abound and they include global plagiarism, paraphrasing plagiarism, verbatim plagiarism, mosaic plagiarism, self plagiarism and incorrect plagiarism.
The severity of each type can range from severe, serious to moderate.

Global plagiarism: This is the most serious of the types of plagiarism and involves a situation whereby someone's full work is copied word for word as one's own work.

Paraphrasing plagiarism: Here, a person's work or idea is rephrased or put in another word without citing the original owner. It is termed severe.

Verbatim plagiarism: Here, a passage from someone's work is lifted or copied without citing the person in the work.

Mosaic plagiarism: Here, text and ideas are combined from different sources to make a new text without citing the original owner.

Self plagiarism: Here, passages or ideas from a previously done work by the author is recycled without citations of the previous work.

Incorrect plagiarism: This involve not giving all the necessary information your source citation.

Here are few ways to avoid plagiarism

  1. Check plagiarism using plagiarism checker such as turnitin.
  2. Acknowledge any work used in the process of writing.
  3. Present ideas your own way and avoid directly lifting from sources.
  4. Where a work is lifted directly make use of the appropriate tool(quotation mark).

Conclusion

In conclusion, no one is an island of knowledge and from time to time, we need to use information from other sources to complement our work. However, they must be properly credited. If it is not done , plagiarism arises and if not properly done, plagiarism also arises. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence and punishment can be severe, serious or moderate. In order not to be on the wrong side of law, there is need to understand it and devise ways of avoiding it completely.
