Watermelon


Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a fruit of African origin that is easy to be cultivated and found in Indonesia. This fruit is still a relative with melons, cucumbers, and pumpkins. Just like its relatives, watermelon is rich in water content so it is suitable consumed in the tropics whose temperatures tend to heat.
Flesh of watermelon can be enjoyed directly or made juice, while the seeds are often processed into a quaci. The skin can actually be consumed into pickles and chips. Not only promising freshness and delicious taste, watermelon also has a nutrient content that is not less high than other fruit. No wonder, watermelon is one of the fruit that is very beneficial for health.

Watermelon Nutrition Content


Nutrient content of watermelon One watermelon consists of 91 percent water and 6 percent sugar. Watermelon contains several kinds of vitamins including vitamins A, B1, B6, and most prominently are vitamin C. In addition, watermelon also contains amino acids sitrulin, spantotenik acid, copper, biotin, potassium, potassium, and magnesium.

Like other red fruits, watermelons also contain large amounts of carotenoid pigment. The most prominent are lycopene and beta carotene. One study showed that the carotenoid content and other polyphenolic antioxidants will increase as watermelon cooks.

Although the price is cheap, watermelon is rich in fito-nutrients and antioxidants that are very beneficial to health. Here are some of the benefits of watermelon for health:

Fat and calorie content is very low, only 30 calories per 100 g so you do not have to worry about weight gain if consumed this sweet fruit. The food fiber that is in it actually helps digest and good for the friend of the diet.

Lowering the risk of cancer


Watermelon is rich in flavonoid antioxidants such as lycopene, beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cyptoxanthin. Anti-oxidants are known to prevent colon cancer, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung, cervix, and pancreas. The content of lycopene in watermelon is even higher than tomatoes. Fresh watermelon contains 4532 μg lycopene every 100 grams, while tomatoes have only 2573 μg.

Likopen in watermelon spread from the center of the meat until the fruit approaches the base or tip of the fruit. One study also shows that the content of lycopene in this watermelon including stable despite being cut and inserted refrigerator up to seven days. Watermelon also has vitamin A and C which is a natural anti oxidant. The total anti-oxidant strength (ORAC value) in watermelon is 142 μmol TE / 100 g.

Reduces risk of stroke, heart attack, and high blood pressure


Watermelon is one source of good potassium. Potassium is a component of cells and body fluids that help control heart rate and blood pressure, thereby lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure or hypertension.

Lycopene and potassium in watermelon is also important for maintaining heart health. While vitamin A and C help prevent oxidation of cholesterol that clog the blood vessels. In addition, the watermelon is known to be rich in amino acid citric acid. The kidneys will turn the sitrulin into arginine which can help smooth the blood circulation and prevent the accumulation of fat in the cell.

Prevents stiff muscles

One study in 2013 showed that drinking watermelon juice before doing strenuous exercise can reduce the stiff muscles that arise the next day. This is because the sitrulin that is converted into arginine by the kidneys can smooth blood circulation.

Maintain kidney health

Watermelon is diuretic because of its sitrulin content that can increase the amount of urine that comes out of the body. Potassium in watermelon is also capable of shedding toxins to come out with urine so that helps promote kidney health to be healthier.

Increase endurance

Vitamin A and vitamin C in watermelon has an important role in maintaining endurance. Vitamin A helps treat mucous membranes to prevent germs from entering the body easily. While vitamin C is needed to keep the production of protein killer viruses and germs.

Maintain bone health

Besides important for the heart, researchers believe that lycopene is also very good for maintaining bone health. Watermelon also contains potassium which can maintain calcium in bone.

Anti inflammation

Lycopene also serves as an anti-inflammatory agent along with beta carotene and cucurbitacin E. This compound is able to inhibit the activity of cyclo-oxygenase enzymes and neutralize the reaction of nitrogen-containing molecules.

Therefore, watermelon is well consumed to prevent inflammation. Sitrulin in a watermelon is also known to maintain stomach acid in order to remain normal.

Strong medicine for men

Dr. Samuel Oetoro SpGK reveals that the content of sitrulin in a watermelon has the same effect as Viagra. Similar results were obtained by research conducted at the University of Texas A & M, United States.

The study showed that blood vessels more smoothly due to sitrulin can improve the ability of erection in men. Sitrulin in watermelon is also found in the flesh, but higher on the white or skin.
