Hello Steemians, here’s to another food walk but this time from the city of Nizams.

Hyderabad is largely identified as the city of Nizams and the city of Biriyani. City is unique in its culture, tradition, language and the lifestyle which stands out as a typical Hyderabadi heritage. If you have a local friend who can guide you then you would have experienced it or have had a taste of it. The city embraces people from all walks of life and Hyderabadis are the sweetest people to live with or spend time with.

We too had our share of meeting some of the sweetest people and enjoying hyderabadi hospitality on our food walk. Saturday morning we drove down to Charminar (also known as old Hyderabad) to see and live the famous names in the foodie directories. Without many expectations we ran into Nimrah cafe and while we were inquiring about those dozen cookies in display a guy called us and made us taste some of them. The guy turned out to be the owner – Aslam and next 1 hour was an experience worth remembering.

Took a walk to kitchen area and was totally floored by the Gigantic oven in which fresh cookies are baked every hour. The chef was really a humble guy and gave a brief idea about the cookies in making. Bakery serves 22 varieties of cookies all baked fresh throughout the day.

Next was the famous Irani tea and it totally lived to the expectations. The milk is condensed by cooking for hours to make the Irani chai which is just impeccable and when served with delectable, fresh and warm cookies the combo is the best one can have!

We also tried some lip smacking puff which had a hint of oregano and is definitely a first for us.

The prices are quite nominal and a big bun with Irani Tea will cost you less than 20 Rs.

We were quite impressed by the whole range and couldn’t resist getting boxes of Osmania & Oats cookies for home. The owner was really courteous and was all over the place helping customers with seats and recommendations. Not to miss his recommendation/ feedback book. It’s filled by some of the most renowned names and we couldn’t resist but adding all the good words about the bakery.

Where: Between Charminar and Mecca Masjid
Timings: 4 am till 11 pm

Other Prominent names we planned to visit but missed

  1. Early in the morning, food lovers from across the city head across to Govind’s Bandi close by. Situated near a Kaman (for non-Hyderabadis: Kaman means the arches built on the road) in a lane next to Gulzar House, Govind serves one of the best butter dosas of Hyderabad. People also gorge on his butter idlis and tawa idlis
  2. Agra Mithai Ghar: Their Malai and Kesar Pista Lassi are famous in the area. Ravi Bandi opposite Agra Mithai Ghar is not so well known as Govind - but many of the street food enthusiasts swear by his dosas and butter idlis
  3. Lined up opposite High Court are three stalls all named Rajasthani Jalebi and Namkins. They excel in making quality kachories and samosas served with an orange coloured chutney and sautéed green chillies. The Jalebis and Imarties (known as Jahangiris in Hyderabad) are not to be missed
  4. Though an iconic restaurant, Shadab serves one of the best non-vegetarian breakfasts in Hyderabad at street food prices. Their nihari and paya are legendary. For people who want a cheaper fare, they can just have the sherwa. Buy some Hyderabadi sheermal/roti naan from shops nearby and dunk it in the nihari – it will taste heavenly. On Sunday they make chicken nihari. And then there are the signature breakfasts available in an irani café – gurda bhaji and kheema roti
  5. In the evenings, a number of street food stalls open up to sell non-veg snacks. Akbar Food Corner next to Mecca Masjid serves one of the best Chicken 65 in town. The chicken is served with Warqi paratha and a red colored chutney
  6. For the best quality beef seekh kababs and boti kababs try Kabab-E-Jahangiri centre near Machli Kaman, which is between Madina and Gulzar House. Here again try the warqi parathas with it. The sad part is that the kababs often get over in early evenings due to the rush. If you are not a beef eater Hotel Shehran next door serves the mutton version of seekh kabab

Hyderabad is a very charming and lively place, I used to visit there often years back when I was working with TCS. I used to carry a lot of biscuits in return always and for sure Biryani used to be a feast.
I love this place very much, more than Bangalore

Thanks for your comment. I found Hyderabad more calm and professional at the same time. Blr is much spoilt by development.
