Join me as I journey by yacht from Southern Chile to Cuba! - Part 5 "Non Stop: Arica, Chile to Ecuador"

in adventure •  7 years ago  (edited)

In my last post, we had arrived in Arica, in the very North of Chile. Arica is on the edge of the Atacama Desert. It's one of the driest deserts in the world.
We were there for about a week, sorting things out on the boat, restocking, getting ready for departure.

On Feb 19th, 2016 we set sail for Ecuador!
This was going to be a longer trip. Arica to Northern Ecuador! About 2 weeks. We were not planning on stopping in Peru.

Every day was almost the same, but there were little things that kept it interesting...
One day there wasn't much wind, so took the sails down... then we tied lines to ourselves and jumped into the water for a refreshing swim in the middle of the ocean.

Other times we'd play with the boys on deck. It was kinda like a small playground for them. They love it! And with all the netting around the boat, it's safe.

Sometimes, when the sail wasn't all the way up, we'd lay in the pocket it formed.

No matter what we were doing on deck, we always had our harness on. It's quite funny to take a shower on deck while having your harness on. There was always that line attaching us to the boat. And that was even more important on days with rough seas.

One day we discovered we had a hitchhiker on the boat. It was this big moth! And we were not even close to land! It was a pleasant surprise to see such a friend all the way out there.

I can't change the direction of the wind,
but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.

-Jimmy Dean

Take care!

Nice photos!

🌷Thank you @sanevys!

So beautiful! How is it sailing with small children? My son and his wife want to live on a sailboat sometime in the near future. Their little girl is 2 now.
Following to see your journey.

🌷Hi @stillwatersart! Yes, I was difficult sometimes, but it was worth it! My older cousin was 2 and a half, while the younger one had just turned 1. I would really encourage your son!
Hey, if it get's impossible...well, at least they tried! :)
In my last post of this series Part 4 “Dolphins Off The Coast Of Chile” I posted two short videos of my cousins looking at many many dolphins. Maybe your son and daughter in law would like to get a taste of what it's like.
A man later commented on this same subject "Sailing with small children".

My reply:
"🌷You are very welcome! I'm really glad this helped you! I think It's more than possible! Sure, my aunt (and the rest of us) did have tough times with the boys... but it was worth it.
One day my older cousin, the 2 and a half your old, was looking out at the horizon with his mother. They were admiring the ocean. In a wise tone, he said to her: "Mama... This is Beautiful!"
It was impressive that he understood that! And I say "It is beautiful that he found it beautiful!"
I wish you two the best! And don't just dream, live it! My grandfather always told my father "You can do anything you want! You just have to want it enough!""

Have a great day @stillwatersart!!

I support your trip, also plan doing around the world voyage on a yacht myself too. Good wind!

🌷That's great @bescouted! When my father was a teenager, in the 80's, he sailed around the world for 6 years aboard a 58- foot classic yacht with his parents and brother. From the stories I've heard, it was a life changing experience that made my dad view life differently than most, a big part of the why I'm growing up the way that I am. I wish you success with your plans. My dad often says, "Dive in and learn how to swim as you go along", he means you can't wait till everything is perfect. There's a point where you just have to untie the lines and go!

You are absolutely right, i dive in all the time :) Sometimes the water is shallow sometimes it is deep :) So it is in the family. Following your journey :) Thank you for sharing :)

Great adventure. Dang, I need a vacation!

Great story!! Do you ever find you get nervous jumping into the open water when you know it's mega-deep and you're a long way offshore? More than you would closer to land?

Nice trip keep it up... You're looking so gorgeous and child is so cute.

Be safe on your way to my country!!
Our cigars are the best!!!

I've never been sailing, but this makes me want to go! I love pictures of the water. Now, the moth, I'm trying to gain perspective as to how big that thing was LOL. Was it like as big as your hand, or...
