What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is when you earn a commission for the online promotion of another company’s product or service.

Essentially, affiliate marketers perform online marketing on behalf of a merchant, with the ultimate goal of driving traffic and conversions for the merchant’s product. For every click or conversion earned, the affiliate is paid by the merchant.

For example, if someone is selling a product for $100 and it's paying a 50% commission for each sale, then that means you earn $50 for every sale you make.
The reason why so many people like affiliate marketing is that all you need to worry about is getting the actually traffic.

You don’t need to worry about creating the product or the back end payment processing and refunds it’s all taken care of by the merchant.

From there they pay you your commissions minus any refunds generally every 30 days unless otherwise started in there terms.

Now not all payments are the result of a sale. Some programs can reward you for leads, free-trial users, clicks to a website, or getting downloads for an app or completing a call to action.

This is called CPA marketing and is used by companies to get leads usually for a very low price and from there they will attemp to upsell them to a higher tiered products.

For Example, as an affiliate you may promote a survey offer where a company is looking to find out what insurer people prefer in the United States, anyone that completes that survey and provides their email you could earn anything from $0.10 to $2 each time.

Types of Affiliate Marketing

Unattached

The first type of affiliate marketing is referred to as “unattached,” or when you have no authority in the niche of the product you’re advertising.

There is no connection between you and the customer.

Often you are running pay-per-click advertising campaigns with your affiliate link and hoping people will click it, buy the product, and earn a commission.

Unattached affiliate marketing is attractive because you don’t need to do any legwork.

Affiliate marketing businesses rely on reputation and trust with a target audience online.

Some don’t have the time or desire to build those relationships, so this type of
marketing is their best option.

“Unattached affiliate marketing I would say isn’t a genuine business model, or not the best way to start in my opinion.

It’s for people who just want to generate income.

Related

Related affiliate marketing is where you promote products and services you don’t use, but that are related to your niche.

Affiliates in this case have an audience, whether it’s through blogging, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or another Social Media channel/platform.

They have influence, which makes them a trusted source for recommending products, even if they’ve never used it before.

The problem with related affiliate marketing is, do you want to promote something you’ve never tried before?

It could be the worst product or service ever and you wouldn’t even know.

It only takes one bad recommendation to lose the trust of your audience.

If you don’t have trust and transparency, it’ll be hard to build a sustainable affiliate marketing business.

PRO TIP: If you do decide to go down this path make sure you do as much research as possible on the product before you go out and promote it!

Involved

Involved affiliate marketing refers to only recommending products and services you’ve used and truly believe in.

Involved affiliate marketing in my opinion is the best way to get started especially when you have an audience that believes in what you are telling them.

In this type of marketing, you use your influence to promote products and services that followers may actually need, instead of paying to get clicks on a banner ad.

It takes more time to build this type of credibility with an audience, but it’s necessary to build a sustainable business.

With this type of affiliate marketing it becomes much easier for you to convert products as your audience wll know and trust what you are telling them.

On top of that you are more likely to get repeat sales and customers and keep your audience long term.

You will find that most of the biggest affiliate marketers and Influencers use this method as honesty and integrity for them is really important and maintaining a trustworthy brand.

For this reason they will only ever promote products they truely believe in or use themselves and this would be my number option for you as someone starting out.

So now that we have touched on the types of affiliate marketing and how important the products are, lets take a look at where you can go as a brand new affiliate marketer to actually find some products to promote and what are some popular niches that you should look into.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Choosing the best and most profitable affiliate marketing niche is a challenge faced by almost all new affiliate marketers.

And if you plan to make money through affiliate marketing, it is a long-term and strategic decision. So think well before choosing.

Here are a few tips to guide you in your thinking process,

Know your interests:

When choosing a niche, get into something you’re enthusiastic about, or have a lot of interest in.

Promoting things you are excited about will make you sound genuine and help you earn expertise in the field.

So, before finalizing your niche decision, ensure you have a certain passion for something and that you are good at it.

Research where the money is:

The best niche for affiliate marketing also has to be profitable, Otherwise what is the point?

If you find a niche that appeals to you, check that it has high-paying offers.

Now I’m not talking about high paying.

Also, consider dealing with evergreen verticals that do well even in times of recession.

Evaluate the competition:

If the niche seems like a good money making opportunity, there is a big chance others think the same. Investigate the competition to understand if you can generate enough revenue for yourself.

Consider how much time and effort you’re prepared to commit to this new venture:

Will you only create PPC campaigns with an affiliate link, or will you also work with social media?

Will you run an affiliate marketing website or a blog? Are you going to collect all your visitors’ email addresses and do email marketing?

Answer these questions before getting your head into your chosen affiliate marking niche.

To make money as an affiliate marketer, your audience needs to connect with what you’re saying.

The items or services you promote need to be products they genuinely
need.

Getting this wrong can hinder your success and diminish your credibility—as well as your audience.

The good news is there are a lot of platforms these days where you can go to find products in just about any niche.

Not to mention that most companies these days offer affiliate programs that you can sign up to quickly and easily.

Here is a list of sites you can take a look at:

Clickbank.com - With 6 million digital products in over 20 categories, reaching 200 million people worldwide, ClickBank is a popular choice among affiliate marketers.

What’s more, this program offers very high commissions, as high as 75%, and
ClickBank is known for its regular reliable payouts, which is a huge drawcard.

There are plenty of products sold on a recurring basis, which means a great source of recurring income for you, as well as products with upsell options to help boost your income.

AmazonAssociates - With Amazon Associates, you can earn a commission on pretty much anything sold at Amazon.com.

What makes this program even more valuable is that you earn a commission on everything new that someone you refer purchases, even if it’s not the product you linked to.

ShareASale - Whereas Amazon Associates is focused entirely on Amazon products, ShareASale houses affiliate programs for 4,500+ merchants, both big and small.

From one spot – the ShareASale dashboard – you can sign up to all these merchants, generate links, and view your statistics.

Cj Affiliate - formerly known by the lengthier name of Commission Junction – is another affiliate network that brings together thousands of different merchants under one roof (a lot like ShareASale).

Along with ShareASale, CJ is one of the biggest affiliate networks out there, which means that you’ll be able to connect with thousands of both big and small merchants. Currently, the exact number is 2,696 different merchants.

Digistore24 - Is another affiliate maket place thats very similar to Clickbank.

They also have over 8000 products in 44 different niches ranging from digital to physical products, they also have seminars and services that you can promote.

JvZoo - Is another digital platform very similar to both Clickbank and Digistore24 where you can find a range of products to promote in a variety of different niches.

These are just a few of the networks and platforms that you can use to promote a range of products.

I have limited this list to a few of the more popular networks and ones that I am currently using.

How To Find High Converting Products?

Now that you know where to find products im going to show you how to locate products that other affiliates are having success with by using the data that these platforms provide.

Lets use Clickbank for this example.

For thing you can do when you go to clickbank is scroll down on the home page until you get to this where you can select top products offered on Clickbank in any niche.

Once you are on this page simply scroll through and select the niche you want to take a look at.

For this example lets assume we have selected the Health and Fitness Niche.

Once you select the niche you will be able to see the 10 best affiliate programs in that niche and this is updated yearly.

From there you can click on anyone of the products to get more information and decide if you want to promote this particular product by going through their affiliate support page.

This is where you will also find all the material you need to promote the product like banners, email swipes, PDF documents, Articles and much more.

The amount of support material you will get will vary from product to product.

The 2nd way you can find high converting products is when you are logged in to the platform.

Lets take a look at this example below where I have logged in and selected the Health and fitness niche.

From there in the sort results by I have selected gravity.

This is going to give us the highest converting product that affiliates have had success with over the last 12 weeks.

Gravity Score meaning: this number represents a unique calculation by ClickBank that takes into account the number of different affiliates who earned a commission by promoting this product over the past 12 weeks. Since more recent transactions are given a higher value, this number can give you an idea of what products are “hot” at the moment, in terms of being promoted by many affiliates and making a good number of sales. However, high gravity can also indicate that there will be a lot of competition in promoting this product.”

Once you go through and find a product you are willing to promote you need to click on the promote button and then get your HopeLink.

This is the link you will use to promote the product.

Before you Start Promoting Your Offer.

Now that you have you product there are a few things you want to consider before you start sharing this link.

Creating a landing page.

The first one is how are you going to create a landing page and collect leads? You should never take your link and promote your offer on the internet without a decent looking landing page.

If you do you are basically leaving money on the table.

When you collect leads it gives you the opportunity to promote future products and services to potentially buyers that have bought for you before.

Also if someone didn’t buy your first product that doesn’t mean they wont buy the 2nd or 3rd offer you email to them.

A lot of people don’t believe that you can make a lot of money online with free traffic.

But that couldnt be further from the truth 80% of all my earnings as an affiliate have come from free traffic methods.
Organic traffic driven by social media and then doubling down with email marketing.

I’m going to list some of the best free traffic sources available to you today online.

Now some of these may have a small cost involved for example, YouTube is free however you need a laptop or computer.

Instagram is free but you need a phone.

So that platform is free to use the hardware to use it will be your only investment.

YouTube

If you didn’t know YouTube is the 2nd biggest search engine online behind Google and billions of people tune in every single month to watch videos on the platform.

This basically means that you have the opportunity to get a lot of views/traffic in any niche.

YouTube also allows you to promote offers inside the description of your videos.

You can also review products and have links to Amazon products that you talk about or promote.

TikTok

If we step away from video content you can’t go pat Facebook.

Instagram

Other platforms that I have used and continue to use are, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Quora and Twitter all of these can be used drive a lot of free traffic and paid traffic and you should definitely look into them as viable options.

Another way you can drive a lot of traffic to affiliate offers is by creating a blog or a niche blog website.

How To Make Money With Niche Blogs?

Creating a blog has become one of the most popular ways to make money online.

And it’s not because they arent capable infact they probably have more skills then I will.

Affiliate marketing isn’t easy when you first start but with time it does become easier especially when you have built up a following and traffic stream.

The next piece of advise I have for you is to always put your audience first and think about what problem you are trying to solve with the product you are promoting.

If all you do is think about the money and you don’t have a long term plan in mind you will fnd it very hard to succeed.

Create content that helps you audience and give back as much as possible. If you do that you will have a strong following and people are more likely to buy products and services you recommend to them.

Another thing you should always do is set your self small goals and track your effort.

Like any marketing program, to be successful, you need to know what’s working and what isn’t.

To understand the performance of your affiliate links, use the tools offered by your affiliate network or influencer monetization platform to see what your followers are responding to.

As you get more sophisticated, your website, email marketing platform, social media channels and site analytics can also provide insights into how effective your other influencer activities are.

By doing this you will be able to sey more clearer goals for yourself that will help you grow your online business.

If you truely want to be successful with affiliate marketing it’s going to take hardwork, dedication, discipline and consistency while always learning from your mistakes.

This can be a very rewarding busines and you need to treat it like a business from day one that has the potential to make you anything from $100,000 to a $1,000,000 per year.
