The tongue issue among nigerians

in africa •  7 years ago

I came into the state with the hopes of furthering my education and learning about a new set of people and getting used to their customs and tradition. But as i began to study them i found out that the ibibio language has impacted negatively on their spoken english. You hardly come across someone who was raised in the public schools speaking good english and i think this calls for serious concern. I personally feel that the only way to curb this menace is to recruit only qualified teachers and equip the schools with good books and other educational tools so that the students can have access to quality education. Finally i think the students should be banned from speaking their local dialect in schools while the english language should be encouraged as a means of communication between students and teachers. While i am not of the opinion that we should do away with our mother tongue i feel we can find a way of balancing it so that we are able to raise students that can represent us at different levels that requires technically sound minds.
