Gemini AI has been (justifiably) pilloried for things like giving pictures of black people when asked to generate images of Confederate soldiers. However, things are improving! I just asked it for a "picture of a Confederate officer." And it gave me this image.
These guys really do look like Confederate officers, and they are white (as were virtually all real-world Confederate officers). However, they are also pretty obviously modern Civil War reenactors, not actual Confederates. GAI can't tell the difference!
Gemini AI's previous penchant for black Confederates (product of a left-wing obsession with "diversity") is an example of horseshoe theory. Black Confederate troops are an obsession of modern neo-Confederates who want to argue the Confederacy wasn't really racist and pro-slavery. In reality, the Confederates didn't even consider raising black troops until late in the war (when they were desperate). No black units ever actually saw action, as the Confederate Congress didn't authorize their creation until shortly before Lee's surrender. Lee supported the plan to raise black troops, but made clear it was because by that point he thought it was the only way to preserve slavery. He also called the Emancipation Proclamation a "degradation worse than death." Racial egalitarians the Confederates were not - except perhaps in the "mind" of Gemini AI (and that of deluded modern apologists for the Confederacy)!
