With the help of Artificial intelligence and a cryptocurrency trick, the Dubai Police have apprehended a 10-man gang who allegedly stole bitcoin worth 7 million AED ($1.9 million) in an armed robbery attempt at the Al Muraqqabat area of Dubai on Wednesday 25th, April.

The gang members entrapped and swindled two brothers who wanted to buy and trade on cryptocurrency, Lieutenant Colonel Adel Al Joker, Director of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), told Gulf News a Dubai based group. The Colonel disclosed that the gang deceived the two brothers of Asian descent wanted to buy the cryptocurrency by luring them into an office apartment and assaulted them before making away with their cash.

"They assaulted the two brothers and threatened them before tied their hands and locked them inside the office and escape with the money," Lt Col Al Joker said.

The gang first acquired the keys to the office premises by conning the shop owner in thinking that they wanted to purchase his licensed property.

In spite the sophistication of the robbery, the gang members were caught and the stolen cash recovered within four hours the crime was committed. Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-In-Chief of Dubai Police, commended the officer’s efforts in apprehending the gangs on a short notice, even though the robbers had left no evidence behind.

While disclosing the details of the arrest, another high-ranking police officer Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, who is the Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs also said that the police facility used for analyzing the investigation data made use of smart programs and Artificial Intelligence technology to track the criminals.

All ten suspects have now been transferred to the public prosecution office for further investigation after being tracked down from all over Asia. The use of innovative technology like Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain technology has been in the forefront of Dubai’s drive for a smart city before the year 2021. The city has already started the processes of registering passports, lands, and vehicles using the blockchain technology.
