#AIR-CLINIC PUBLIC FORUM 22: Should Doctors and Nurses be Given the Same Privileges ?!

For many years there has been this power tussle between doctors and nurses. Each faction have always tried to claim superiority over the other. To the general public the Doctor is usually seen as more superior to the Nurse. However maybe due to misunderstanding of the tenets of teamwork or a general feeling of complex, the Nurses, in particular, tend to try and usurp the status of the doctor when compared to them. A crucial look at both professions show that both of them have different but synergistic roles to play in the overall management of the patient. The doctor is usually involved in history taking, physical examination, testing, diagnosis of the patient while the nurse is concerned with the drug administration, wound dressing, physical care, hygiene and proper feeding. Both lines of work maybe different but they depend on each other with the ultimate goal of improving the health condition of the patient. As a result it is safe to say that both professionals need each other to succeed. Putting the variability of both lines of work into consideration it wouldn't be proper for both sets of professionals to be given the same privileges. The doctor's duties should be spelt out as are his entitlements; same as the nurse. I believe more emphasis should be placed on improving health care than in comparing the privileges of the doctors against that of the nurses.
