Slow Breakup

Normally showing off its title as the "Snowiest City in the World," Valdez, Alaska, USA has had another low snow year at sea level: only 25-30% compared to the 10 year average. Much of the precipitation fell as rain, leading to widespread instability in the snowpack in the surrounding mountains; avalanche danger has been a continuous threat all winter. While each year has a stretch of sunny weather in winter and spring thanks to high pressure "bombs," the immediate forecast is making a more convincing case than ever that this year might really be the winter that ended in mid-March.
