The only way to cross the Vjosa-River at Tepelene is using the old swinging bridge: on your way to school, to the market or the local administration. I was hiking up to Beçisht, birthplace of Ali Pasha, thus crossing the river one early morning. One of my hosts had brought me there by motorbike, indicating the small pathway down to the river.
I stood there in awe, gasping at the unregulated, unstraightend, untamed flow of the last wild river of Europe, the Vjosa. This wildness might not last for much longer, as a couple of powerplants are being built further down the river. Albania still suffers from powershortages and using the force of the wild waters might to be an easy way for production - yet destroying, what futher tourists might seek and enjoy.
