Have you been down Historic Main Street in Grapevine and saw the sign that says "Palace"? Did you know what it was? For me this is the hidden jewel on Main St. It is the "Palace Theater" built by James Kirby Buckner in 1940 for $25,000. Seating capacity was 473, including 22 loveseats (pretty cool for a date night!), and 130 balcony seats. The theater Grand Opening was a Thursday night on November 21, 1940. The premiere motion picture was “My Love Came Back” starring Olivia De Havilland. The ticket prices were ten cents for adults and five cents for children.
The original Art Deco style along with technical facilities, audience amenities and backstage spaces expanded to attract and present the best in live performance and film programming for families from across the region.
The facility is the center of cultural and civic activity for Grapevine and all Northeast Tarrant County, the Palace Theatre Arts Center is the place to celebrate music, theatre, dance, cinema, and the visual arts. Plus a place to gather for special events, civic meetings, private parties, entertainment for all ages and so much more. In 1991, the theater was Threatened with closure it was then acquired by the Grapevine Heritage Foundation to preserve the building from ultimate demolition.
One last piece of trivia... The Palace Theater is listed as in the National Register of Historic Places.
I have been to the theater for several different type of events... each time I am wowed by its beauty and nostalgia! These include meetings, movies, and the Grapevine Opry. Just check out this picture of the inside:
Plus you have the adjacent historic Buckner Cash Grocery Building (circa. 1930) has been transformed as an additional performance and meeting facility. This space can accommodate up to 180 for a noon luncheon program and 200 for an in-the-round theatrical performance that evening.
This multi-use facility offers more than 15,000-square-feet of rental space for Parties, Meetings, and Private Events in two separate venues: the Palace Theatre and the Lancaster Theatre.
