7 Day culture challenge - day 1! Holland,

in alldutch •  7 years ago

@conradt started a new challenge, the 7-days culture challenge. In this challenge. In this challenge you have to write about things that are typical for the culture of your country. I was nominated by him which I think is great because there is so much to write about culture and I would like to read about different cultures to see possible resembles or the opposite.. great way to get to know eachother and our backgrounds even better..

fanatically support

Although it doesn't seem like a culture thing, I do like to think it is. I often call it the 'orange army'. People who are supporting are partying with dutch sports or festivals. I have never seen elsewhere the dedication and almost 'over the top' support for (for instance) national teams. The dutch people are worldwide famous for their way of making a party of it, their bond with the color Orange (our national color)...

When there is a world- or european championship (and yes, we obviously have to qualify which we didn't this time) the whole stadium turns orange. With Ice skating, also a national sport, there are always dutch brass bands (also orange colored) who make the atmosphere for the stadium.. So that is really something that is in our vains, So culturely determined...

But Dutch people also are bonding with music festivals. Like this weekend there is another episode of the "Toppers". That is a concert by 4 Dutch artists which organize these concerts every year with a different theme. People are intended to come to the concert dressed in the style of the theme.... And believe it or not, no one excluded, everbody does it.....

So where comes this Orange color from?

The color Orange has to do with the last name of are King "Oranje Nassau" Oranje is Dutch for Orange. It goed century's back when a ancestor of our king , King Hendrik III, married a lady fro Breda. They were given the French princely Orange. With this princely the title "Prince of Orange" was connected. The family inherited the title, but when the son of King Hendrik III didn't have any kids when he died, the title went to his German cousin "Willem van Nassau" better known as "Willem of Orange" , our royal family today are still relatives of "Willem van Oranje Nassau", and is a important part of our history. Our king now "Koning Willem Alexander" still is called "Prince of Orange", but now it is only a title....

So this a little piece of our culture , I think this is a great challenge because you have to dig deep yourself in your culture...
