My interest in crypto-currencies began over a year ago. It was around that time that I went on an adventure in an attempt to buy Bitcoin anonymously—let’s just say, it didn’t go well and was much harder than I could have ever imagined.
Due to that and also the lack of outlets locally that accept Bitcoin, I was merely a spectator—that is, until Steemit.
After I made a few hundred dollars overnight by publishing two posts, I was stuck with Steem Dollars (SBD) and was unsure if they were convertible to Bitcoin, Federal Reserve Notes (FRN), or any other medium of exchange that would enable me to actually spend it.
I did some research and using Blocktrades, I was able to convert my SBD to Bitcoin without logging in—no personally identifiable information necessary—to a privacy advocate that was quite the feat, even if the transaction fees are a little more expensive than through the various exchanges. For me, privacy is worth the cost.
So, now I was stuck with Bitcoin and had nowhere locally to spend it...
So, what do you do? Here are some options.
1) Purse.io
This is probably one of the more well-known ways to spend your coin. Purse allows you to buy items off of Amazon at a discounted price. Unfortunately, the entire Amazon directory isn’t on there, but nonetheless, there are a ton of things to buy. For example, I bought a $30 Buffalo Wild Wings gift card for $20. Other things listed include drones, Bitcoin merchandise, art, and other technology.
You can even sell your items on there, if you’re looking to make a little more coin.
2) eGifter
This was one of my more spectacular finds. eGifter has a huge selection of gift cards, ranging from food all the way to Best Buy.
Let’s say you convert your SBD into Bitcoin through Blocktrades, which takes about 10 minutes for it to come through to your wallet; then, you peruse eGifter and are hungry for, say, Applebee’s.
You complete the transaction, wait for it to go through (~10 minutes), print out the gift certificate, and head to fill your gullet. It takes less than 30 minutes for the entire process.
I tested this out on Target and Burger King gift cards—success! Nothing better than booze and burgers!
3) Foodler
I probably order more delivery than the average person, because let’s face it—leaving the house can be a struggle sometimes, and there’s always the possibility of an encounter with one of the government’s bludgies.
That said, Foodler was truly an amazing find.
Briefly, Foodler is an online restaurant ordering service that lets you find local restaurants, browse menus, and place orders for delivery or take-out at no extra charge—and the best part?! You can deposit Bitcoin and you earn points for each order, which could translate into gift cards, shirts, coffee mugs, etc.
There’s only one place here locally and it was Chinese food—perfect. On Thursday, I tested out the service, and here was the result.
Food delivery paid in Bitcoin—we surely live in interesting times.
4) Vape Supplies
Believe it or not, you can even order vape supplies with Bitcoin. I did this last week and received 10% off, simply for buying the product.
I have only used MistHub, but I highly recommend them. They currently have an e-juice sale going on for 15% off. I paid using the crypto-currency, and two days later, I had my juice. Voila!
I’m sure there are others I’m missing, but these are just a few that I have used since finding Steemit. If you’re looking for other products or services, a quick Google search could serve you well—that’s how I found all of the aforementioned outlets.
The impact Steemit has had on my life has surely been profound. Not only have I been able to pay for my day-to-day things, but I have been able to do so anonymously, and without using the government’s phony FRN’s.
Cheers to the future, fellow Steemers!
