Prohibition is always the real enemy of a free, peaceful and prosperous society. That doesn't diminish the real crimes committed by the gangs on either side of the "law", but it does a lot to explain why those crimes happen.
The profits and violence of prohibition always lead to corruption and crime because the only people willing to risk the consequences are the criminals.
There ought to be a law!

And you arent even mentioning of all the money spent to house people in jail for having or dealing in pot.
We can take the same approach to gambling. It is illegal for you or I to run a poker game but states can run lotteries.
The SEC doesnt let people invest in certain securities people they might lose money yet there is nothing against buying lottery tickets which have a guarantee of losing.
