In Dedication To Programmer's Day, 2016 - For Those Who Tirelessly Make Everything You're Currently Looking At Possible
Most of the computing world already knows the story about a young, Finnish graduate student at The University of Helsinki that created a clone of the Unix and Minix operating systems, then gave it away to the masses. His story has been told, and will be told for the rest of time. His simple, hobby-like experiment became the foundation of freedom and innovation that made so much more possible.
Operating systems were the silver, gold and platinum for the final decade of the 1900's. Governments, corporations and especially "The Secret Society" that essentially controlled both, expected operating systems to be the new age mechanism for final enslavement of the world's citizens. They had big plans for the code that enabled the invention of the century run and do their bidding for them. The decision had already been made as to the chosen few that would be allowed to create operating systems and The Secret Society had no intention of allowing an obscure student at some Finnish university spoil all their well laid plans.
The Student
Unofficially designated as "the opiskelija-", (Finnish for The Student - oh-pis-skel-eee-uh), the young programmer was under Secret Society surveillance for several months following rumors that he was planning to clone the tightly guarded Unix operating system. Only select corporate interests would be allowed access to it as Unix was intended to be the power behind the powerful. The general masses would be given close fisted, toy operating systems like Windows and Mac OS, a means for leading the lambs so to say. Unix was for the giants to rule the world, in addition to controlling the coming "ultimate attractant". The Internet.
The following is an image of a redacted document stolen from Secret Society Archives which plainly states the young programmer's intention to freely release his newly created, open source operating system to the world.
The Infamous Email
The Student had a different vision though: software development that fostered innovation by inclusion. Allowing the entire world to participate and contribute to the code that would affect their everyday lives gave them a vested interest in it's success. Through this collaboration, he found that his best efforts were amplified by the camaraderie of his peers. Their contributions were not only helpful, but necessary to the rapid development and improvement of the project.
Currently, the majority of the internet runs on the vision he had that historic day; 25 August, 1991. The open source software movement shifted gears the moment he uploaded that code. This was the day The Student forced the entire planet's hand and inspired us all to work together for the better good. It's a story that's still, and always will be taught in classrooms to other eager students.
What most people don't know is the untold story about an obscure, anarchist rock band that made it all possible. Known only by the raunchy moniker Silent But Deadly, SBD as they're known by insider circles, played an indispensable role in The Student's historic act of defiance. The Secret Society had issued an unprecedented Order of Immediate Assassination on The Student, the first time a civilian had been targeted under this unlawful power they bestowed upon themselves. Armed by their illegal attack dog police force, Black Ops, The Secret Society was closing in fast, determined to stop the release of that precious code.
Black Ops
Fortunately, Black Ops' presence in Helsinki was detected immediately by The Anarchist Surveillance Sect, a secret group of mobilized operatives that alerted the members of SBD in the nick of time. Having to act quickly, Silent But Deadly sprang into action hatching a foolhardy plan consisting of only their superior intellect, and lame ass musical talents.
The strategy was simple, utilize their contacts in The Anarchist Surveillance Sect to organize an impromptu riot, engulfing the city streets of Helsinki. With the local police, as well as Black Ops completely caught off guard and combating the riot, Silent But Deadly would break off from the crazed mob, lead a ragtag band of anarchist stoners and seize control of Helsinki's crown jewel, The Olympiastadion. What resulted from all this insanity was the gig of their life, as well as an extremely long prison sentence.
The One And Only Silent But Deadly Album
In hind sight, the whole bloody rawl could have been accomplished with the riot only, but SBD was not to be deterred. You have to understand, Silent But Deadly was smoking a lot of hashish back then and for the most part, couldn't get a real paying gig to save their life. Their anarchist friends only showed up when they played because they had a lot of cash, booze and drugs, thanks to their wealthy parents and bottomless trust funds.

Thank you. I'm working on more Silent But Deadly characters, but the story is all in my head :)
