Overfishing and the construction of dams decimated the population of this type of dolphin, characterized by its long nose, until in 1979 the Chinese government declared it in danger of extinction. In 1983 their hunting was outlawed and the species gradually decreased until in 2007 only 23 were found. In 2008 its extinction was officially declared.
