Communicate without talking: Man as a social animal

in animal •  7 years ago

Aristotle defined man as a "social animal". Who knows if today he would continue to define it as such or even he would have given him the nickname of "social". More and more apps, more and more sophisticated technologies that replace the "spoken word": now you order at the restaurant with a click and you exchange like in place of talking in person. The technology that advances, the verbal communication that goes backwards.

Communicate without talking

With the advent of the Internet, and not only that, many things have changed; the way of communicating has changed practically, the already innumerable applications have increased that allow people to feel in ever shorter times, to share thoughts, images, sounds, to locate and record you but.... without talking. But what does it mean to communicate? It is transmitting information, a message from one side to the other, through a transmission channel and, of these instruments, history reminds us of the invention, for example, of the telegraph, of the telephone, instruments that put in "foreground" the voice, without which these means would have died in the bud. Today technology has made giant strides but we have almost forgotten about the "spoken word", we have forgotten how exciting it is to exchange a word in front of a coffee shop, how beautiful it is to look into the eyes and not to use more and more these tools that are practically suppressing verbal communication almost as if man was becoming slave to his own inventions.

Technology yes but sparingly

Werner says that the media are very important but they are and still remain auxiliary means, adding that nothing can replace the human relationship between two individuals. One encounters a "closed" communication circuit, where one struggles between being and having to be, the appearance in the world of the web that is proving to be much more important than what one really is in everyday life. These tools should be used sparingly,"tailor-made", they are a benefit for technology, for progress, but they should not weaken the concept of communication between individuals because they would risk becoming all equal, all glued to a screen, with your fingers on a mobile phone with your eyes graded from orbits to read messages that go crazy from one network to another in a thousandth of a second and that can be removed with one click, as well as removing people from friendships. This is not to communicate, this is to get lost in what is believed to be communication but which is not actually. Communicating is, or should mean, also being closer, but if you use these tools, through which this should happen, in an erroneous way, you are increasingly distancing yourself because the interpersonal relationships between individuals are dying.
