My rabbits were free too! (but not so free the foxes could get at them at night!). And sometimes cats are too free to make a mess in other people's gardens! (and eat their birds!)
Of course, I totally agree with you that we are beastly to animals on the whole. We don't appreciate how they are integral to our life on earth turning out a success.
Sadly I came across a disturbing video @winmental found - or at least, I think it is disturbing. I was especially surprised that many people simply did not want to believe that training elephants to PAINT is cruel. Most people found it cute, but I think immense cruelty is always(?) involved. In any case, we misunderstand the intelligence and sensitivity of animals too often.
