The Bears Come A-Visiting….

We got a call at 1:30 PM on Tuesday afternoon from the farm 2 doors down. It seems they had left their garage door open and the local momma bear and last year’s cubs had come to check it out. They have stored bird seed in there in the past and she has found it before.

They chased her off by banging on pots and let us know she was headed our way. She had gone out behind their barn and headed north across the neighbor’s field to our south. She came across our middle pasture and followed the lane along its north side towards the house.

The piglets were probably inside asleep. The barrier was enough to deter the bears.

My husband is on the back steps to the gardens taking these photos. He’d shut the door as our elderly cat with dementia had decided she MUST go out NOW. Next thing I hear is Slam! She’s gone out the back door to the wood shed. I zip over and she’s still on the steps. I manage to grab her and in she goes, mad as all get out! Screen door latched shut!

Apparently the momma bear looked into the cold frame then kept going.

Good thing we didn’t set it up last week!

We’ve seen this momma bear for many years. Sometimes she has 2 sets of cubs, last year’s and this year’s.

Off to terrorize the horses at the stable next door….

The trees behind the bears is the swamp and on the other side of it, about 100’ away is the bears’ super-highway that they’ve used since we built here in 1983. I expect it has been in use for decades before that, perhaps even centuries.

When the stable next door was built 2 years ago, they had no idea what created the well worn path there, and never asked. So they built their house on it. Now they are worried about the bears and their little daughter…

Wow thats so cool - I would love to see them like that just ambling around. I know it's scary but what beautiful animals they are!!!! Thanks for sharing :)

That is crazy!!! Your neighbours must be kicking themselves for building in the super highway! Right in the backyard, woah.

And your cat....hahahahahaha!!! That made me laugh, mine is as feisty and has about the same bright ideas!

Years ago the cat decided it was a good idea to stalk the bobcat....We had to go out and rescue her. She couldn't claim dementia then....

Those crazy people! Built their house right on the bear superhighway. I loved the photos and the adventure. Thank you!

Those bears look like they are a good size. Good to see you are all fine and they were just over for a short visit and didn't come in for snacks. I see the mama has a collar they must track her.

Momma has been around for many years. Some years she shows up with last year's and this year's cubs. Last year she had 3, so she lost one over the year.

That is too bad she lost one. Hopefully it went off on it's own. They are neat to see but you are smart to keep a good distance.

It was far too young to be on its own....

Oh that is too bad. :(

Wowy! Those make the deer in my back yard not look so bad... You've never had conflict with any of them? We've definitely got bears here in Alberta, but I've only ever seen them but a couple of times, and nowhere near where we live.

We don't bother them, they don't bother us. The only problem we have with them is when they decide to go thro the electric fence. It becomes about 20' longer than it was.... and we have to fix it.

Woah, no kidding! I guess the zap isn't enough to deter hey? Have you other bears that come through besides black bears?

No, just the blacks. The thick fur insulates them. They's only be susceptible to shock on their noses, and maybe ears.

Potentially useful insight! Thanks! What do you figure they're eating in the area? Or is it purely the passageway that makes them come in?

There's a river on the other side of the road, there's the swamp on our north boundary and behind it used to be a small woods. They'd follow the edge of the swamp in the woods, down to where they could cross over on our sand hill, going south, into the brushy area south of us.

Most of the things that drew them have been built on or removed now. I think the momma still comes because she always has. Not sure there's much to draw her anymore. They are omnivores, will eat about anything.

Nice pictures! Good to see them semi wild (they have a working agreement with their neighbors) and they are is great shape! Glad they are nosey, bears are supposed to be, LOL. :)
