In their natural habitat, the wild relatives of guinea pigs live in open areas, and seek refuge in caves abandoned by other animals. They are easy prey for many predators so they do instinct for self and personal protection. They are always on alert and near a shelter in case they should escape. They can run a lot to save the danger. They live in groups, so it is advisable to have at least two guinea pigs living together.
