The walks of our dogs, How many walks does a dog need a day?

in animals •  7 years ago

The number of walks that we must give with our dog throughout the day is directly proportional to his age, race, state of health and of course to our available time. We must keep in mind that not all rides are going to be long, many of them will simply be for your needs outside the house.

Dogs need a routine as far as exits are concerned, that way they can get used to holding their urine and feces until the time of the ride. We will see when, how and how often it is advisable to take a dog to walk, depending on the factors indicated.

How often do you have to take a puppy for a walk?

Puppies do not need to take long walks so their walks are simply limited to the home environment. Remember that you should not take a dog for a walk until you have all your vaccines mandatory and recommended by the veterinarian, as it could contract dangerous diseases.

Puppies do not need to go for a walk for more or less three months of life, not having all their vaccines is better to have it at home and let them just play and have fun (if we have a private garden where there are no other animals, use it).

Puppies over three months old and with their vaccines on, can begin to enjoy the outside world, meet other people and puppies, play around the parks nearby and above all, discover the world.

However we should not force them to take long walks, we must let them decide what they want to walk or play, without forcing them.

It is advisable to go out at least four times a day. And all exits must be at least twenty or thirty minutes, except one that must be at least an hour or more.

By way of example these would be very good routines of walks:

  • 30 minutes to wake up in the morning, to pee, poop and take the air.
  • 30 minutes at noon to pee, poop and take the air.
  • 60 minutes in the afternoon, to pee, poop, play and interact with other puppies.
  • 30 minutes at night, to pee and poop before bed.

Obviously if you can do more exits or increase the duration of them, it would be much better. Dogs love to be on the street and enjoy nature.

How often do you have to take an adult dog for a walk?

If it is a healthy dog that does not require special needs for prostate problems such as incontinence, it is usual to remove them at least four times a day, as well as puppies.

Although here we should apply some common sense and value the age of our dog. If our dog is young and strong, we can and should exercise it daily to maintain good health.

During the daily walk we must walk and not be sedentary, as for example we would be with the walk of a puppy. However if our dog is already older, we must treat him like a grandpa and give him walks more quiet, without pressure.

By way of example these could also be good schedules:

  • 30 minutes to wake up in the morning, to pee, poop and take the air.
  • 30 minutes at noon to pee, poop and take the air.
  • 60 minutes in the afternoon, to pee, poop, play, walk, exercise and interact with other puppies.
  • 30 minutes at night, to pee and poop before bed.

Remembering that young dogs need to burn their excess energy daily, so going out to jog or bike with them is an excellent option. To the oldest, we must not force them, some days they will want to walk and walk and others simply enjoy lying on the grass of the park.
