Intelligence of Animals

in animals •  7 years ago

Being a lifelong observer of nature and domesticated animals it seems obvious to conclude that animals express various degrees of reasoning abilities. I believe many animal species experience feelings that are not based upon instincts alone. They just lack the mental flexibility inherent in the human species.

The most intelligent animals are chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, horses, octopus, crows, squirrels, dogs, cats and pigs. Dogs in particular use humans to solve their problems for them.

Darwin was one of the first scientists to write about the existence and nature of emotions in animals. Six emotions have been identified as basic: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. Complex emotions would include contempt, jealousy and sympathy. Dogs and chimps are known to express jealousy when it comes to getting attention from humans.

There's more to animal behavior then instincts or learned behavior. Animals are curious, communicate needs, and even have expressions. More and more science is uncovering a secret world where animals reason, from apes and crows using tools to whales learning to communicate with other species just to belong.

Several articles have been published in support of animal intelligence and their ability to reason. A few titles include; Beluga whale learns to 'talk' to pod of bottlenose dolphins, What Are Animals Thinking? More Than You Suspect, How Animals Self-Medicate, How Animals Think, and A New Frontier in Animal Intelligence. There are many, more.

Did you know...
Chimpanzees are better than humans in some memory tasks
Goats have excellent long-term memory
Elephants can work together as a team with no human prompts
Parrots reproduce human language and some even have an understanding of the meaning of words

In the words of Temple Grandin ...
I wish animals could have more than just a low-stress life and a quick, painless death. I wish animals could have a good life too with something useful to do. I think we owe them that.

Problem solving in action...

Critters are waaaaay more clever than we sometimes give them credit for. ;~D

Smart little dog you have there, I saw the light bulb go on as she REASONED how to get at those treats!🐓

She was one of my earliest clients and did stuff like this all the time. I gave her 'puzzles' to solve to make her day more fun. I wasn't sure what she would do with this one, so I just sat nearby and turned on the camera. She had it figured out in just over a minute and half!

Anyone who doubts critters can think, just isn't paying enough attention. LOL!

Thanks humvee beep beep!

As much as we tried to understand them, animals are doing their best to express things that we can understand them too..

Exactly, if they could only talk🐓

this is really cute with the pics, but you do need to credit your photo sources to be considered original. i like the subject. try expanding on it a bit more -
this could have been a really great piece with a bit more work.

A very nice post. I enjoyed reading it because I am a big animals lover :)

Thank you🐓

What a beautiful post! I did know that chimpazees surpass humans in memory tasks, there is a japanese psychologist who theorizes that humans lost photographic memory hability to language! I never knew, though, that goats have good memory 😃.
@mother2chicks, I also wanted to say thank you for the lovely message you left me ❤️. Life has been pretty overwhelming at the moment as I have just moved to another country: I am now living in Portugal; but, unfortunately could not go to steemfest! When everything is ready here I will be steeming again! I am very much looking forward to it! Much love 😍😘❤️

Dear Friend, what has you moving to Portugal? A sudden decision or something unexpected? Really none of my business. Just happy to know you are well and not abandoning the steem for all of it's quirks.

The most interesting part of the animal story which I only touched on was about a beluga whale that was swimming with a group of bottle nosed dolphins. It was frustrated and lonely because he couldn't speak dolphin, but began to learn their language so they could be friends. True story.
Let us hear from you when you get settled. I am so glad to know that you are well.
Until then take care. Your friend. 🐓🐓

Good morning @mother2chicks 🌷a carefully made decision and a two-year plan brought me here! 😊 I am very happy! As for Steemit, I will be back soon ( I am very much looking forward to it!) :))
Meanwhile, I will be following your blog (as usual) and educating myself about the animal world through the wonderful info you bring to us such as the beluga whale one! Simply wonderful!!
All the best & much love ❤️

Hello. Thank you for your thoughts. It's occurred to me that chimps and gorillas and orangutans (who learn sign language and the use of picture symbols to communicate with us) are as intelligent as we, or more so even. How many humans learn animal languages so successfully? It seems it is often the animal learning to read humans in order to have a smooth interaction, and we just expect them to do so.

You bring up a good point, I actually agree with you.🐓

Indeed every animal has a degree of thought and understanding that emerges from its view of something
Here, every animal you have placed is different from the other
Cat, dolphin, elephant, monkey and dog If we look at each of them we will see that their way of thinking as animals can show us by looking at something
But the common thing is the environment of the reef and the animal environment in which they live
Greetings

@walidsalah

Thank you so much for coming by. Animals understand much more then any of us know.🐓
