Intoxicated animals in the wild

in animals •  7 years ago

Many animals in the wild are being consciously intoxicated. In addition to the well-known drunk monkeys and elephants there are many animals looking for a high.

Dolphins get high off puffer fish

Dolphins show again why they belong to the smartest species. The BBC was able to determine how these marine mammals approach the poisonous puffer fish in a particularly way. Although the poison tetrodotoxin is deadly in large quantities, the dolphins seem to know exactly how far they can go. The dolphins chewed gently on the puffer fish and floated in a kind of trance quietly near the water surface.

Lemurs get high off millipedes

In the rainforests, monkeys like the Lemurs use the poisonous million feet (millipedes) to get high. The insects have a defense mechanism that produces a poison when they are in danger, the monkeys are fond of it. Research has shown that the poison in the apes has the same effect as drugs in humans, they get high.

Monkeys, elephants, deer, wild boars and sticktails get drunk

Where we humans drink a couple of beers or wines we away get drunk, that's actually easier for animals. They can already get drunk if they eat overripe fruit. And that produces hilarious images. In this video you will see a number of African animals walking around after eating overripe marula fruit.
