When I first looked into doing animations I immediately went into software (I am not an artist) and appreciated the concepts of "bones". Characters with bones allows a completely un-artistic person like myself use a program like Anime Studio to do pose to pose without too much issue.

So cool. Bones / Rigging is definitely a way to save a ton of time - I haven't spent a ton of time with rigs yet but I did learn the pin tool in after effects which does something very similar!
