His own fake arm turned out to bring good luck to Gildarts. After learning that August could be attacked with magical objects, he immediately defeated Zeref's sons with his left hand.

Gildarts is one of my favorite characters in Fairy Tail. He's almost like the Jiraiya of Fairy Tail due to the fact they're both powerful comical perverts but with kind hearts.
