Hello termites,
If you've lived in some parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America in the 90s, you might have watched a soccer anime called Captain Tsubasa.
Never heard of it? If you need a refresher, Anime News Network lists those following localised names for it:
Campeones: Oliver y Benji (Spanish)
Capitão Falcão (Portuguese)
Captain Hawk (Polish)
Captain Majid (Arabic)
Che campioni Holly e Benji (Italian)
Die tollen Fußballstars (German)
Flash Kicker
Holly & Benji: I 2 Fuoriclasse (Italian)
Kapitan Jastrząb (Polish)
Kuningas Jalkapallo
Los Super Campeones (Spanish)
Olive et Tom (French)
Olive et Tom , Champions de Foot (French)
SUBASA (Vietnamese)
Super Campeões (Portuguese)
Super Campeones (Spanish)
Super Campeones: El Original (Spanish)
الكابتن ماجد (Arabic)
キャプテン翼 (Japanese)
If you remember, great, if not, too bad but keep reading anyway. Just 3 weeks ago, the series received a pretty solid game on the iOS and Android, which you can check out here. How is it, you might ask? GREAT. I'm now addicted and probably need help.
So, now that we got that out of the way, DID YOU KNOW THAT IT'S ALSO GETTING A NEW ANIMATED SERIES IN APRIL?
This adaptation will again adapt the original 37 volume manga, so if you were ever interested in a fun sports anime like Inazuma Eleven or Prince of Tennis, Captain Tsubasa will definitely be worth your time.
But just what the heck is Captain Tsubasa?
Tsubasa Ozora is a young Japanese Elementary school student who is deeply in love with football and dreams of one day winning the World Cup for Japan. He lives together with his mother in Japan, while his father is a seafaring captain who travels around the world.
That's the basic story, but what you should know is that the show is essentially a mixture of Dragonball and football / soccer, and it's really really entertaining in that respect. The 1983 anime series was so massively popular in the 80s and 90s that it even influenced many professional players to take up the sport in their young years like Zinedine Zidane, Andrés Iniesta and Fernando Torres. It of course also had a big influence on the creation of the professional football / soccer league in Japan, the J-League in 1992.
