Jenkinrocket's Top 6 Fighting (Shounen) Anime #2: Hunter X Hunter

in anime •  7 years ago

Coming in second place is Hunter X Hunter. Hunter X Hunter is really, really good show. There's as little meaningless filler as I think is possible in any story. It's like a lean cut of beef that you remember long after devouring. The show is actually rather long, but it doesn't feel like it. The episodes all flow so naturally one into the other over the wide and generous story arcs that you never feel like you've quite completed a whole episode. It felt like that the whole way through. And it still felt like that the second time I watched it.

Other than the anime that takes the top slot on this list, no other shounen show can boast that feat.

Hunter X Hunter has the same clean feel of Soul Eater. The main protagonist is closer to the shounen norm, but is actually a bit younger than the normal main character. This lends an interesting dynamic to the series as the four main characters, two of which are children and one of whom is a teenager, are constantly battling against battled hardened, ruthless adults.

The story of Hunter X Hunter follows a young boy, Gon Freecss, as he discovers that the father he thought was dead is not only alive but an accomplished Hunter. Despite learning that his father has abandoned him, Gon becomes determined to follow in his footsteps and become an accomplished Hunter by passing the Hunter's Exam. Along the way he befriends Killua Zoldyck - an assassin around his age, Leorio - a physician in training, and Kurapika - last remaining member of his clan, out for vengeance.

The story gives each character the spotlight in turn, offering very moving and deep characterizations and providing the context for each and every battle that takes place. The story is intense, well written, well animated, and deeply emotional.

A long time ago it used to be a somewhat rare anime, but with the advent of internet and such it has enjoyed more popularity in recent years.
