Go here for Obscure Anime #3.

The top slot on this list was easy to come up with, but I really struggled with what to put in the #2 slot for Obscure Anime. I wanted it to be something I really liked, but that was unlikely to make it onto any other list I might make in the future. Obviously it had to be (semi) obscure. After pushing my mind to the limit I finally remember Beyond the Boundary.

Let's be honest folks: there's a lot of anime out there and most of it is pretty damn bad. This goes times two for the non-mainstream pile, I think. But now and again and you rummage through the forgotten anime and find a gem gleaming in the pile. One of these gems is Beyond the Boundary.

I don't even remember where I bumped into this anime. I hadn't thought about it in a long time and, to be honest, probably wouldn't have if it weren't for this list. It's an anime I walked into with no expectations, thinking that the title sounded cool and the animation on its poster looked nice.

The show follows two characters, Akihito Kanbara and Mirai Kuriyama team up to battle supernatural creatures that threaten humanity. Well, Mirai's not quite there. She may have the ancient bloodline of hunters, but not much in the way of guts. Akihito has an interesting secret of his own, which puts him in a unique position to help Mirai.

What really makes the series shine is the animation and character work, foremost and above all. It's just. So. Damn. Beautiful. Really worth a try, folks.
