DRAGON BALL SUPER: A revisiting and comments before entering the next arc.

Five years ago, when the movie Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (2013; released to theaters in America in 2014) was announced, anime fans all over the world became excited. Word was that it would be the first DBZ movie to become canon, and the movie didn't disappoint; even more, it was the first time in a long time that Goku actually lost a fight.

A second movie that also became canon, Resurrection 'F' (2015), about the resurrection of villain Frieza, managed to also perform well. Then, the announcement for Dragon Ball Super, the first series after almost 20 years, got people excited; problem was, the first two arcs (about one third of the current run of the series, which has seen 91 episodes already aired) were a retelling of both movies.

After that, two more arcs, one about a tournament in space and the other revolving around Trunks From The Future, managed to disappoint, as they were perceived as recycled. Then, we have the current arc, which is said to be the penultimate of the series, and is promising to lift the overall level. dbs2.jpg

It is a good gift to Dragon Ball fans. It has Akira Toriyama (the Dragon Ball creator) involved, and has reportedly said to be enjoying the process, something that didn't happen with Dragon Ball GT, the purposed sequel to Dragon Ball Z that had a mixed to bad reception and is now considered not part of the canon. It was the answer to lots of fans, some of them in their 40's and 50's, and is heartwarming to see those old characters back. It's enjoyable, yes, but only if you was a fan already, and if you overlook the poor quality of the animation that plagued the first half of the series.

The new arc, that will make the strongest warriors from a series of universes collide in a battle royale, will bring back to the center underused characters like Tenshinhan and Android No. 17 in order to save those universes from destruction from the Kings of All Universes, Zeno, provoked by Goku's neglection and becoming the villain in the eyes of the universes involved. As said, it has the potential to become one of the franchise's most impressive arcs. For now, it has some transition episodes, in which Majin Buu will be replaced from Goku's team and will revive (again) Frieza. The move, that will air in the next few episodes, has already attracted negative criticism for recycling yet again a character, a major foe of them all.dbs3.jpg

The series, which covers the time gap between the defeat of Evil Buu and the fight between Goku and Uub that became the end of Dragon Ball Z, can be seen currently on Crunchyroll.
