Anomali, a cyber security and threat analysis platform, reported its discovery of malicious software targeting consumer storage devices. Entitled eCh0raix , it would be a ransomware that encrypts files on NAS devices, thus blocking access to users.
A new ransomware
The recovery of Bitcoin (BTC) did not reveal that good news for the crypto sphere. Since the beginning of 2019, hackers have benefited from the revival by perpetrating cyber-attacks with more complex processes and especially from ransomware.
Indeed, taking data hostage has become the tool par excellence to extract crypto funds from Internet users.
Recently, the company Anomali Threat Platform, which analyzes and detects threats to prevent attacks has unveiled new ransomware for the general public.
Entitled "eCh0raix", this software would target Network Attached Storage devices , which are networked storage structures.
Anomali's blog explains that ransomware operates efficiently by encrypting files using the AES protocol before adding a ".encrypt" extension blocking access to users if they do not pay Bitcoin money. via a site on the Tor browser.
More accessible storage for hackers
NAS devices are highly sought after by Internet users and would facilitate attackers' access to sensitive files according to Anomali, especially since they are rarely secured by commercial antivirus.
In this perspective, the platform of analysis says that the ransomwares succeed well their coup and that the Internet would facilitate the task. Meanwhile, Joachim Kennedy, a member of Anomali's research team, hopes their activities can warn users to take proactive steps "to stop this new attack before it can cause major problems." .
