Rohingya Demands Justice During UN Chief's visit

Kutupalong: Rohingya demanded justice during UN chief's visit today in makeshift camps of Cox's bazaar, Bangladesh, where more then 800, 000 Rohingya are sheltering after fleeing deadly massacre in their home land.


UN Secretary-General António Guterres and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim have visited the makeshift camps in Kutupalong today, on 2nd day of their three day visit in Bangladesh.
The UN chief and World Bank Group President arrived in Cox’s Bazar around 8:45am to visit the Rohingya camps along with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, and Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali.

At around 11:00 they arrived at the Kutupalong camp in Ukiya and met the Rohingya there in a meeting.


Initially he met a huge rally of Rohingya in the area, who held demostrations, demanding their rights.
In his recent tweet Antonio Guterres said "they want justice and a safe return home".
Later he had a meeting with the Rohingya and there he heard unimaginable accounts of killing and rape from Rohingya refugees who recently fled Arakan (Rakhine) since late 2017.
In his further dialogues he said "a humanitarian and human rights nightmare", over the siatuation that have been going on the Rohingya people.
On Bangladesh hosting such a huge no. of refugees, the head of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, called it a "mission of solidarity with Rohingya refugees and the communities supporting them. The compassion & generosity of the Bangladeshi people shows the best of humanity and saved many thousands of lives".
Earlier on 1st July, lingering Rohingya in Kutupalong and BaluKhali 2 area held demonstrations demanding justice and restoring their rights back.

Both the demonstrations in those areas were organized by a Rohingya organization named as "Voice of Rohingya", who already forwarded Rohingya's demands ahead of UN chief's visit.


Beside UN chief and World bank president, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee is also in her 10 day visit to Bangladesh, and have started her visit in the Rohingya camps.
Following their 3 day visit in Rohingya refugee camps, they will analyze the situation of the newly arrived Rohingyas in Bangladesh, and assess progress towards a safe, voluntary and dignified return of refugees in line with international standards, the UN said earlier.
