Aristotle, one of the greatest thinkers of ancient times was born at Stagira on the North Western Aegean Sea Coast, in 384 B. C.
He was the son of Nicomachus the personal physician of Amyntas II the ruler of Macedonia. He spent his childhood in the Macedonian palace premises where his father’s residence was.
When he was 17, he went to Athens, Greece, and attended the academy of Plato where he remained until Plato’s death. Next Aristotle went Assus as the guest of Hermias the ruler of Assus. He married Hermia’s niece Pythias there.
After the death of Hermias in 345 B. C. he went to Mytilene and carried on zoological studies.
In 343 B. C. king Philip of Macedonia invited him to Pella the capital then, to be the tutor of his son Alexander. He went there and did his job perfectly well. In 335 B. C. after Philip’s death, Aristotle returned to Athens and founded outside the city, a school which he named ‘Peripatetic School’.
This school had a communal life and a large library and was a center of research in every field of contemporary knowledge.
When Alexander died, there was an outbreak of feeling against Macedonians in Greece, and Aristotle was accused of being loyal to Macedonia and tutoring Alexander in his youth.
Aristotle left Athens and went to Chalcis and died in 322 B. C. of a digestive disease, there.

The importance of Aristotle :-
Aristotle has been the greatest philosopher of the Western world and his influence in still significant.
He was a philosopher of moderation and common sense.
Aristotle’s philosophy is an inspired common sense, governed by a critical insight into the meaning of human experience.
He was one of the founders of the inductive method, and he was the first to conceive the idea of organized research.
He was the founder of logic.
He prepared the systematization of geometry.
He offered proofs of the spherical shape of the earth and attempted to estimate its size.
To the four elements (solids, liquids, air and heat) he added a fifth named aether. (the natural movement of which was circular)
He is said to have discovered the law of the lever, and that sound is transmitted by vibrations of the air.
He made the first systematic study of meteorology and wrote a text book on the subject.
He carried on immense botanical, zoological and anatomical investigations.
He clearly recognized the fundamental problems of biology, sex, heredity, nutrition, growth and adaptation.
He outlined both a theory of evolution and of scientific classification of animals.
He proposed theories of generation and heredity.
He may be called the founder of comparative anatomy.
Yet we have got to admit the fact that some of Aristotle’s errors however retarded scientific progress because of the uncritical acceptance of his investigations. (Denial of sexuality in plants, considering the heart as the seat of intelligence, e.g.)
