Arnis, the Philippine national sport and martial art, is officially known as Arnis. It is also known by the names "Kali" and "Eskrima". This form of martial art focuses on weapon-based combat with knives, sticks and bladed weapons, as well as some improvised weapons. Hand-to-hand combat, grappling and joint locks are all part of the sport. Weapon disarming techniques can also be used. The sport's practitioners are called arnisadora (male athletes) or arnisadora ("female athletes). Arnis is a combat sport that allows one to defend himself against attacks by using hand-to-hand combat, grappling, and weapon disarming in weapon-based fights.
The sport was initially practiced by commoners or peasants, but these practitioners did not have the knowledge necessary to make any written records. Arnis was officially declared the Philippine's National sport and Martial Art on 11 December 2009. The Philippines' first national Arnis association (NARAPHIL), was established in 1975 by Gen. Fabian C. Ver.
