IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN

Spring time in alls its glory. Everything is in bloom, the trees, the flowers and sadly yes the bugs. Mostly black flies. Those nasty little critters.

I am sure science has a purpose for them, however they are nothing but a large nuisance, and their bites can create horrible reactions in some folks. They cause pain, itching and swelling and soreness within a localized area. Allergic reactions can involve the entire body and may cause headache and fever. Certain times it may even lead to an infection. They buzz about your head, and you can not garden and eat outside. They will not disappear until mother nature makes it very hot so in the meantime you either stay inside or get bitten. It is like a pin when they bite you and intensely itchy after for at least three days. To some people in can cause an allergic reaction and the effects are insane. Red hot swelling , intense itching and an infection. There is however another alternative and that is bug spray.

Bug spray or better known as Deet. DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many repellent products. Even though we have often been told there is not a health concern in using this product I still wonder. Perhaps if you live in the city and you are landlocked and not near much water the odd administration of Deet may not pose as a problem. However living rural and being surrounded by ocean, lakes, streams, ponds and yes even rain barrels, the amount of exposure to flying critters is huge. There fore the amount of Deet one would need to use on a constant basis in also huge. Personally I find that frightning.

There are alternatives and that is to make up your own spray that works quite well. It is safe, harmless in fact, smells nice and yes it works. It works in two ways. As a bug repellent and also as a bug oil. This is super easy to make and you really need only a few ingredients. The first being a spray bottle, available at most Health Food stores.

Next you will need some Aromatherapy Oils and a Carrier Oil available at Health Food Stores or available on line.
Your carrier oil can be one of the following. You will decide which one to use based on availability, cost and personal preference. The ones employed most frequently are Almond, Coconut, Flax Seed, Hazelnut, Hemp, Jojoba, Olive, Safflower, Sesame and Sunflower. You can also use Borage, Evening Primrose, Rose Hip Seed and Wheat Germ. The ones I use most often are Almond or Jojoba. They are readily available and cost effective. Jojoba is often a wise choice as it takes much longer for this oil to become rancid.

Next you will need some Essential OIls. There are many you can use, so here is a choice of a few. Basil, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cypress, Eucalyputus, Fennel, Laurel, Lavender, Melissa, Niaouli,Patchouli, Peppermint, Pine, St. John's Wort, Sandalwood, Spruce. Tea tree, Thyme, Vetiver and Ylang Ylang.

Below you will find a recipe to use as a spray and also as a bite oil.

INSECT REPELLENT AND BITE OIL

2 ounces carrier oil
3 drops eucalyptus oil
3 drops spruce oil
2 drops niaouli oil
2 drops patchouli oil
2 drops pine oil
2 drops vetiver oil

In your clean sprayer bottle add the essential oils to the carrier oil and blend. Apply the oil to insect bites to help them heal. To repel insects, apply the oil to your skin before going outdoors. If you get a nasty bite while out there, clean it well, apply ice for swelling and then apply bite oil.

So go out and explore and enjoy.

Absolutely beautiful cover photo! So serene! The delicate pastel hues in contrast with the darker shadows and branches is quite visually interesting, and the pond's slightly blurred reflections are tranquilizing. The bridge and blossoming tree in the overall scene reminds one of a Japanese Tea Garden. Just lovely!
Thanks also for the bug repellent recipe; we have houseflies, stable flies which bite, and mosquitoes. I personally know one person who died, and one who very nearly died (was dreadfully sick for almost a year) from the mosquito born West Nile Virus. Here in Southern California, in a county east of Los Angeles, we have had several cases in our horses, some fatal. We now have vaccines for the equine. Nothing for people. This is where your ounce of prevention would be well worth gallons of cure. Thanks for sharing!

So glad you liked the picture. Yes tranquility. The recipe works well here for us on the East Coast of Canada. We are totally surrounded by water and trees, so it is a breeding ground of mosquitoes, ticks, and black flies. The black flies are brutal this year and will not leave till it gets real hot. Worst of all is the ticks, which carry Lyme Disease. Big problem here.

Yes! I know about that disease through my horse contacts, but also, I was around when it made it's national debut on the news way back when.

It is becoming a National Issue

I've got some left over that you made us last year, about half a bottle still. The kids LOVE it! <3 <3 <3 And so do I. It works like a charm, and never have to worry about nasty chemicals going on their little bodies. Love you Marion!

Love you all too. I need to make up some more here.

Flies are very nasty. We should kill them. ha ha ha.

Spring is the best time for enjoying but flies are a problem. It good to spray for Driving away from the flies.

We don't get the black flies down here, but the mosquitoes are brutal! I made up a quick version of a similar spray with essential oils to use, too. I am with you--I avoid the chemical sprays as much as possible.

Ya we get both...I find that the spray or similar ones works well. How are you these days? How is the running going for you?

All is well in my neck of the woods! Just getting acclimated to the heat and humidity for some shorter distance summer running. I hit my spring half marathon goal, so now I need to figure out what I want to accomplish next. How's your running?

my running is sad this year. I have spent a lot of time in Ontario moving my mother into assisted living and have a nasty Piriformis issue as well. Starting to get reaquanted with yoga in the hopes of being able to run well into a ripe old age. Thinking this is just a glitch.

I'm sorry to hear that. Life sometimes throws you some curve balls, that's for sure. Hopefully it will all pass and you'll be able to get back to it. I actually just cleared out some space in my house to try to dedicate to yoga. I know I need to incorporate it more as a preventative measure to keep being able to do the running and other physical activity I enjoy so much. My hip mobility will end up causing me trouble in the long run if I don't get serious about it now.

ah..is that not ironic. I just totally converted my office into a beautiful yoga retreat. I have had hip issues for years. The mobility is a problem. So in order to keep active I will have to make it a strong part of my life from here on in. It is a whole new paradigm shift now. I also found some awesome DVD's ..Yoga for runners. Keep in touch. xx

Very useful article Marion, thanks. We are not plaged, with many biting insects here, only a few Mozzies, and ordinary house flies which are annoying and sometimes they decide to bite in the late evening for some reason. I usually use vinegar, and definitely don't scratch that makes it worse. I like your formula, I will see what ingredients are available here, as I too don't trust that Deet is safe. 😎😎

great, nothing like smelling like a plate of fish and chips :)))

Ha ha. We use Vinegar around the house for cleaning too. 😎

yes, we do as well. Windows, coffee pots, all sorts of things. Even the um shh water closet. But I do not like the smell of it. Eau de Vinegar.
