In Sanskrit, the word art is called "cilpa." As an adjective, cilpa means color, and the word is suentu cilpa means fitted with beautiful shapes or beautifully decorated. As a noun it means coloring, which then develops into all kinds of artistic cultivation. Cilpacastra which is widely mentioned in art history lesson, is a book or guidance for the cilpin, the artisans, including what is now called artists.
In Latin in medieval times, there are terms ars, artes, and artists. Ars is a technique or craftsmanship, namely agility and skill in doing something; as for artes means groups of people who have dexterity or skill; and artistas are members within the groups. Then artist can be likened to cilpa.
