Omayra Sánchez. 1985. Author: Frank Fournier.
The eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia broke 25,000 lives. The authorities completely ignored the disaster and left people without help, preferring to fight with the guerrillas.
French photographer Frank Fournier reached Armero three days after the city was covered by a landslide. Omayra Sánchez (13-year-old girl in the photo) spent all those days in the mud, trapped in a ruined house. Frank could not help her. The photo was taken a few minutes before the girl's death, she died from hypothermia and gangrene.
A victim of hurricane. 2008. Author: Patrick Farrell.
In 2008, Haiti suffered a devastating hurricane, with an innocent name Hanna. Officially, the hurricane caused damage of $ 160 million, claimed the lives of 537 people and became the most destructive in the history of Haiti. Heavy rains completely flooded dozens of towns, the water level was exceeded 2 meters above sea level.
Photojournalist Patrick Farrell made a series of black and white pictures of the victims of the floods. Some of them were dedicated to the boy who has not even any clothes, only old broken stroller.
Refugees in Kosovo. 2000. Author: Carol Guzy.
Some called the events in Kosovo the civil war, others argue that it was an act of genocide. The fight for territory and freedom between Albanians and non-indigenous populations has forced ordinary citizens to leave their homes, to escape the horrible torture and death.
Variables the victory of the Albanian and Serbian forces have divided the country, literally, with barbed wire. On photo 2 year old Agim Shala is passed to his family on the border with Albania. Photo by Carol Guzy - American photographer, she's one of the few who was awarded the Pulitzer prize 4 times for the brave reports and photos from the hot spots.
Hunger in the Sudan. 1993. Author: Kevin Carter.
The photo shows a Sudanese girl, dying from hunger. Her parents went to unload the plane with humanitarian aid, at this time a vulture flew to the girl, waiting for her death.
Kevin Carter won the Pulitzer prize for this shot. But, at the same time he came under criticism from the public, which accused him of indifference to the fate of the child. The photographer could not resist this pressure, which was the last straw amid all the horrors that he saw in South Africa during apartheid. Kevin Carter committed suicide.
Before each professional photographer, sooner or later gets the choice: to stay impartial observers and to tell millions of people about the events taking place behind the walls of quiet homes. Or, drop the camera and become a usual person, hoping to help here and now. Everyone makes their own choices.
