Acrylic Fluid Art: Canvas Dipping Texture (Video)

With acrylic painting there are limitless techniques to bring colors to the canvas! One that I find particularily intriguing is the pouring of a fluid texture on a sheet of scrap paper and then dipping the canvas into it:

Cost is always a factor and since I'm just starting out on my art adventure, I'm mostly playing with cheap, small canvasses, which I prefer over canvas board or card stock. And if something doesn't turn out at all, I can just hold these little things under the faucet, wash the unholy mess off, and try again. At least, I'm not messing up the big bathtub in the process – less time for cleaning, more time for painting :)

To cut down on the usage of expensive mediums, I'm using PVA glue_(Elmer's Glue)_ for my experiments. I understand Floetrol would be a better alternative, but here in Germany, they charge pharmacy prices for the stuff and I can't really find it in the home improvement stores anyway, i.e. add shipping and handling! So, PVA it is...

For my colors I'm using good quality, full-bodied artist's paints, not the watered-down cheap stuff they sell in craft stores. For the time being, my pouring mix consists of

  • 100 parts PVA glue,
  • 30 parts artist's paint,
  • 40 parts water.

I'm stirring the ingredients together in the listed order. Using a kitchen scale, I can get it right every time and have consistency across the board.

Germany is metric and conveniently enough, 100g + 30g + 40g make up an 8 oz cup (250ml), give or take. 40 parts of water also approximates 30% of the glue/paint mix, which is the max dilution I feel comfortable with. Anyway, give it a good whipping, and the stuff runs like honey :)

BTW, for inspiration I have my very own personal musician on standby, to serenade me whenever I'm in a creative mood! Meet Müpfel:
