”Desert Composition No. 3” 11"x15"” (#3395) watercolor on Arches paper
by Lee Gordon Seebach

Cataloging My Work

If you've been following me on Steemit for any length of time, you may have noticed that in the description of my work under my posted images, there's a number in parentheses like above: (# 3395). I know you've been dying to know what that number represents, so I'll tell you. 😉 So here goes....

As a professional artist, I have to keep track of my work or else I'd be hopelessly lost as to where my work is located. In the past, I sold my work through up to six galleries across the country. In addition, whenever I complete an artwork, it must get a title, and since I often paint in the same area for quite awhile or paint the same subject over and over, titles will repeat. For example, I must have painted hundreds of pictures of Oak Creek, so have ended up entitling many of them "Oak Creek." So how do I distinguish one "Oak Creek" painting from another? Each artwork I complete also gets a catalog number. So, when I go looking for a painting in my database (I call it my Artist Registry - fancy, huh?), I look for the number of the painting and not the title.

So now you know. Or is this TMI? 😂

(Actually, this is prolly boring information instead of too much information, but I thought the artists amongst you might like this little tip from a pro.) 😎

Have a superlatively stunning day today and every day!

And yes, the rumor is true: I've been known to pick a mean five-string Bluegrass banjo. Shown here with my Gibson Mastertone RB250. "You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy."

I've been fortunate enough to have had a couple of commissions myself for my pencil portraits. Clearly not as many as yourself if this is piece number 3395, but even if I had only sold one it would still give me great satisfaction to know that my work was gracing the home of someone who appreciates it, so you must be a very happy man to know that this is the case for so many of your works. :)

It must be a nightmare keeping track of all of your work when it is so spread out around the world! :) I'm sure your numbering system helps a great deal. If I ever enjoy such success I shall have to keep it in mind! :)

Hope you are also having a 'superlatively stunning day!' :)

@tonyr Yes indeed, I have many paintings in collections and that's very gratifying. I only have one gallery representing my work so it's not so bad now. I did have to rotate unsold work from one gallery to another for many years, and if unsold, had to bring them home. THAT was a nightmare! LOL I mostly sell my own work now, thankfully.

It is much easier these days to represent and sell your own work....without the need for going door to door. :)

I've only just rediscovered my enjoyment of drawing which is something I really loved doing when I was younger and am hoping that given time it might allow me the same freedom and control over my own life that you seem to have managed to achieve.

I'm hoping to try painting soon but that doesn't come as easily to me as the drawing seems to. :(

Selling my own work is far, far better than dealing with art galleries on a consignment basis. I have a billion nightmare stories I could tell about gallery owners and so does every other professional I know, although they continue to put up with it. I only have one such gallery and it's owned by my cousin, so we have no issues whatever, and she's the only one to whom I will EVER consign my work from now on.

At any rate, keep going @tonyr

Very nice painting Lee! :D

Thanks so much! @mayasky

Great artwork sir ☺️ finally understood what the number means... ☺️ I guess we should catalogue all artworks ☺️

Thanks so much @btcunchained It works for me!

😊👍

3395, i assume you are doing almost 1 painting per day for at least ten years?

@steemboys Not exactly. More like 45 years of work. And there were periods when I had to work at jobs in order to eat. Not exactly a predictable paycheck coming in each Friday. ha ha

It's definitely not boring information, man, haha. I'm actually curious where you store your work until you sell it now! Anyways, another sweet painting for sure :)

@deadspace Storage is definitely a challenge. Now, if all of my paintings sold, that wouldn't be a problem! 😀

followed :)

Hahaha. Man i can't praise you everyday. I'm not that kind of person fishing for upvotes.
It's already a fact that you'r amazingly good in painting.. so it's weird to mention it everytime.

Chicken fries is a fried chicken looking like french fries. And very easy to eat and delicious.
And you can't say that kenguru playing banjo is weird! I thought it's cute.
