There are several pictures that i recall from memory from time to time but the most remarkable from them is the masterpiece of Albrecht Dürer - Melencolia I. I like to meditate on that picture and it always gives me a new experiences and thoughts and charges with some creative powers. There so much patience and mystery in it. And look at this truncated trapezohedron. Isn't it perfect?

I saw one of the prints in Hamburg. The most special thing is that he actually made the engraving himself, which is a rare thing among artists. It is a fantastic piece in its composition and motives, but also in the delicate way it is made.

I like how he depicted the the traces of the drying liquid on the polyhedron. Most part of art critics consider that there is a face on the facet but i think that it's the trace of drying liquid that left after the polishing.

Art historians need images to mean something and this is one of their jewels - but I agree. I found this high. res. version and you can see how he has worked with different patterns to make different textures. It is very delicate.

I think he tried to show different structures in the stone like in granite, but it could also be water.

But you might be right about textures, he did his best to depict the stone as much natural as he could.

Yes, could either...
