I've been tinkering with digital painting software (GIMP2), and this is one of the better pieces I've created thus far. I wish I'd been able to put more details into the background, but it was for a class and deadlines had the final word on when it was complete, sadly enough!

The drawing was indeed based on a photograph. I used a technique similar to that used in rotoscope films where I drew over the image until nothing remained but my painting. In other words, I turned a photo into a drawing.
