"Naiad" (16x12 oil on panel) painting process

in art •  7 years ago

Good morning. Since joining Steemit yesterday, I've been digging back into past paintings and sharing process photos and some thoughts for each one. Here's the painting process for "Naiad", which was painted around the same time period as "Left Turn" (in my previous post). Same model as well!

First stage. Loose (but accurate in proportions) block in with umber to establish shape of shadow:

Next stage. I start painting directly in color. The challenge is to achieve accurate values even though I'm altering skin colors:

Next stage. My paintings are often very simple in concept. I'm drawn to the power and drama that can be found in simple visual ideas. Sometimes additional narrative ideas or deeper meanings begin to emerge after that initial visual spark, and sometimes not. Red dress with green everything else...simple.

David, this is incredible. Seeing how the painting comes to life is fascinating. Look forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you very much!

I really love this! Watching it unfold as you created it was an added bonus! Voted & resteemed with pleasure :)

:D Glad you enjoyed it and thank you!

this Painting is just so pleasing to look at.
probably because its mainly green...
but anyways it's nice to see the process behind the painting, keep up the great work!

Thank you!

Wow! That's a stunning painting! One advice: don't put all your art directly like that, build your community links first in order to gain visibility, follow people and leave comments... Because if not, your posts could just disappear in the maelstrom of the feed... Steem is a marathon, not a sprint, as you'll hear often! :) Good luck!

Thank you very much and I appreciate the advice! 👍

Wow!Here you have my vote.

😁thank you!

I think this one is my favorite. Green is my favorite color and your shading on this is amazing. Muscles look great here, so detailed.

Awesome, thank you!
